Feel free to visit us there is more to do than you think .

Thorn - camping de Maashoeve

is only about 7 km. away from the pretty white town of Thorn.

Thorn is known for its white-painted old houses and monumental buildings.

Thorn was founded when the abbey was founded here around 990 for women monks of noble descent. Eventually the place grew into a small principality. It was not until 3 centuries later that the place received city rights and was partially walled. Many of the women's old houses have been preserved and can now be visited

Thorn's sights are mainly the many white houses, of course the beautiful Abbey Church and the Municipal Museum Land van Thorn is certainly worth a visit.

The municipality of Maasgouw has a walking network of 150 kilometres.

The walking junction network combines existing and new routes into one network. The new network has the same design as the bicycle junction system, and connects to existing junction routes in the municipalities of Echt-Susteren, Leudal and Roerdalen.

The centers of Ohe en Laak and Stevensweert are located on an "Island in the Meuse", which is approximately 5 kilometers long and 2.5 kilometers wide. This unique location has determined the history of both centers. The fertile river clay attracted people early on. It was not until 1882 that a permanent river connection was established via the bridge over the Oude Maas.

Swimming

Day beach de Maasterp 500m from the campsite

about 15 hectares is part of the Dilkensplas. For inexperienced swimmers there is a special place, no deeper than 1.4 meters. The day beach borders the Dilkensplas nature reserve.

Restaurant and sanitary facilities have been built on top of the dike. This is due to flooding in the winter season.

Dagstrand "De Kis"

In Stevensweert there is a day beach that is a stone's throw from the Stevensweert marina in Stevensweert.

Natural monuments and its beauty.

Galloways and Konik horsesThe Dilkensplas near Laak in particular is characterized by rough bank erosion and deposits of sand and silt.

The vegetation consists of riparian forest, thickets, brushwood and rich river valley vegetation.

Especially in winter many water birds are encountered. Since 1992, the 40 ha area (of which 20 ha is water) has been grazed with Galloways and Konik horses, they ensure that varied nature is created instead of just forest. The grazers have been chosen for their friendly nature, but they remain wild animals. Therefore, for your own safety, always keep a distance of 25 meters.

Fish pond: "the Teggerse Plas"

Opposite the Maashoeve, together with a number of fish ponds in Stevensweert, the fishing club "De Snoek" belongs to the fishing association.

Together with VOF Natuurbedrijf "Eiland in de Maas", Natuurmonumenten is the proud manager of the Molenplas. A beautiful natural lake that originated from the last major traditional gravel extraction. Special bird species such as the common tern and the little plover have already been observed and the beaver has also been spotted. The entire area is accessible to walkers to stroll and for bird watchers a bird watching screen has been placed.

Natural areas on the "Island in the Meuse".

A great nature reserve has been created around Stevensweert and Ohé en Laak. Easily accessible via wide footpaths. And people who want it all a bit rougher and more exciting can also stroll through the area. An area with a varied offer. With rapids.

Nature reserve in Ohe en Laak - Limburg

With a vantage point that offers a breathtaking panorama. With a bird island and trees, plants and animal species that develop at lightning speed. The Hompesche mill and a group of primeval trees are the two characteristic elements of the area. Just go out for a day in Stevol. It's really worth it. Because you can taste the atmosphere of the future Grensmaas nature.

Maasdal landscape

The so-called "Maasdal landscape" is characteristic of the Island. This landscape is formed by flood plains located directly on the banks, with slightly higher fields behind them.

The flood plains are mostly used as pasture. Along the edge of these fields are small street villages, which follow the line of the river and are not always protected by a dike. More inland, the remains of older river channels can still be seen in the landscape.

The area has a completely open character.

In addition, the area is dominated by the high dyke of the Juliana Canal. This canal was dug between 1925-1934 and visually cuts off a part of the Maasdal of the river from Maasbracht to Maastricht.

Finally, the gravel pools are characteristic of this area. After the 2nd World War, the extraction of gravel that was deposited by the river in the Meuse valley during the various ice ages was started on a small scale. In the late 1960s, early 1970s, this industry really took off.

Gravel was a "raw material" for concrete and asphalt. Partly due to the actions of the local population, the gravel puddles have been given a new destination as a recreation or nature reserve.
